Boughton Extensive Green Roof Substrate – EX 1

EX 1 is composed of recycled, unused, crushed brick and PAS100 compost. EX 1 is designed to be free draining, porous, and lightweight.

Due to its structure, EX 1 substrate is best suited to extensive green roof applications and should be installed at a depth of 80-150mm. The substrate can be installed at depths greater than 150mm but other substrates, like IN 1 are more suited for this application.

EX 1 substrate is especially suited for drought-tolerant planting schemes, with Sedum mixes suitable between 80-150mm and wildflower mixes between 120-150mm. As a result of its free draining nature, temporary irrigation may be needed to help plants establish during certain times of the year.

The plant communities planted into this substrate make it so that irrigation is generally not required on installations with this substrate. Boughton Loam can provide additional advice if needed on how best to specify and install this substrate.

Application

Boughton Extensive substrate is designed for the planting of sedum schemes. It should be laid at a minimum depth of 80mm and directly onto a drainage board.

Boughton Extensive Green Roof Substrate meets and exceeds all present GRO guidelines. The depth of substrate is determined by the planting scheme and the weight loading capability of the roof which must be assessed by a qualified structural engineer.
