Overview

Founded in 1584, Uppingham School in Rutland is a co-educational independent boarding school for c. 790 children aged 13-18.

Known for its strength in music, the performing arts, and sport, it provides a nurturing environment, supported by excellent facilities and beautiful external grounds.

Scope of work

In charge of Uppingham’s Grounds and Gardens Department is Rob Fisher, who has held the position of Head Gardener at the school for the past ten years. Having previously used British Sugar TOPSOIL’s Landscape20 topsoil for existing borders, adding grit and compost to increase friability, Rob recently took delivery of 60 tonnes of TOPSOIL’s premier planting soil, HortLoam.

Delivered in three 20 tonne loads on 8-wheeled lorries during December 2017 and January 2018, HortLoam was used by Rob and his team to create six new large-scale borders around the school’s main quad. 60 tonnes of in-situ soil was excavated and the HortLoam spread to a depth of 500mm to allow the planting of more mature/larger trees and shrubs.

HortLoam’s coarser, free-draining structure and enhanced levels of organic matter provide the ideal growing conditions for newly-planted trees, shrubs, perennials, and vegetables.

Customer's feedback

Rob is delighted with the product:

“I will only use British Sugar TOPSOIL and I specify it on all my projects. Their new product, HortLoam, is lovely to use. I was able to get it ordered quickly and delivered by reliable hauliers. It’s the best topsoil I have found for consistency.”

In addition to the school grounds, Rob is also responsible for landscaping areas in the town of Uppingham, which has won a Britain in Bloom Gold Award in the Small Town category.
